Lauren Ballard - Artist in Residence
During the summer term we were very lucky to host Lauren Ballard, as an artist in residence. Lauren worked with children in Foundation, Year 3 and Year 6 creating art works from plastic bags, bottles and other recyclables.

Here Lauren is working to create a large sculpture using and off cuts from plastic bags.

Three very large sculptures were also created. Here we have the large turtle. The main body of it was created with withies and wire mesh. Plastic bags were then shredded and woven through the wire to create the turtle’s body. The shell was created using plastic bottles.

This fish was created in a similar way. A third sculpture of a jelly fish was also created. The central body of the creature holds a host of plastic bags with further shredded bags creating the tentacles. These three sculptures took prominent places in our school Art open day we held in June.

Every child and parent that saw them were amazed by them. Following the art open day these sculptures will be going on display as part of the Teignbridge sculpture trail for summer 2008. For further information please follow this link. http://www.trail.org.uk/home.html
Lauren’s page on the TRAIL website can be found at http://www.trail.org.uk/stlauren.htm
We are really grateful to Lauren for her dedication in working with us this term and wish her success for the future. Her work inspired many children to carry out works of art for themselves and challenged their thinking about recycling and environmental issues.
Art Open Day
Following the success of Lauren’s residency the school opened its doors to the children’s families. During the day children took their visitors on a tour of the school to see a huge variety of art work made by children from the whole school. There were many opportunities for people to have a go at different techniques.

Year 3’s sculptures in paper

This sculpture was created by Lauren and the children in Foundation. All the panels were created from discarded plastic.

Year 6 created these items from silk. Having learned how to ‘read’ portraits, they took each other’s photographic portrait, learned to paint them using water colours then learned the technique of silk painting. Once they had mastered this they experimented with using the computer to create block patterns of their portrait. They used this to create fabric and sew it into ties, bags, cushions etc.

Here you can see a part of the hall, workshops in action, families ‘having a go’ at art and thoroughly enjoying themselves.

Year 6 put this display of sculpture on. Following a pond dipping lesson, the children studied the creatures they collected and made willow and wire sculptures of them.

Year 2 created these pictures and clay models
