History at Gatehouse 2024-2025

Our key objectives for History teaching and learning at Gatehouse are:

• To develop pupils’ understanding of the past and the impact it has on the present.
• To develop the teaching of chronology throughout the school.
• To develop pupils’ understanding of how historians find out about the past

Our curriculum takes the form of a two-year rolling programme. The curriculum is carefully designed to allow for the teaching of chronology. Where possible, time periods studied are sequenced chronologically within year groups. Children are taught how historians find out about the past through hands-on opportunities, such as the use of artefacts and external trips e.g. to a local museum. History lessons are designed to inspire the children at Gatehouse. They are taught why learning about the past is important and links are made to career opportunities.
